What inspired you to rethink the bedroom?

Sleep routines and consistency is essential to a good night’s sleep. Temperature, light, pillows, mattress, air quality and your general sleep environment all contribute to how well you’re likely to sleep each night. We felt that WHIT was the right model for us to showcase the perfect bedroom. It was designed with optimal sleep in mind and it’s a space that highlights evening, night and morning routines and the tested and validated products associated with each to help you sleep better than ever.

Why is sleep important to a person's health and well-being?

We all sleep, every day for our whole life. And during sleep, our bodies recover, our minds re-energize, and our wrinkles soften. We wake up energized, refreshed, our creativity is enhanced, and our performance improves.

Unfortunately, half the population doesn’t get the sleep they need every night and that leads to major consequences. Health risks increase, our performance, creativity and even how we look suffer and serious accidents occur.

With over 1 million sleep products on Amazon alone, how do you know which one works for you - or works at all. You could go to the drug store and buy a pill, gadget or gizmo. But which one and is relevant for your sleep issue? Maybe a mattress, pillow, noise machine, who knows? There is no simple way to determine what works, and what risks could occur.

That’s why the SleepScore Labs Sleep Sanctuary in WHIT is so important. It’s our goal to enable every person to unlock their potential by transforming how they sleep night after night – for life. At WHIT, we’re able to showcase the perfect bedroom and the products we’ve tested or validated for truly improving sleep.

Why did you choose to work at WHIT?

The idea of a home designed to utilize technology for optimizing healthy living is at the core of what SleepScore Labs is doing with sleep science. WHIT’s goal of “activating health solutions and technologies and researching their ability to measurably improve health and well-being” aligns with the SleepScore Labs model of

  • First measuring your sleep with the SleepScore App
  • Providing personalized, science-backed advice and product recommendations for improvement
  • Continued monitoring to ensure improvement continues

As the “Sleep Company Changing the World by Changing the Way you Sleep,” we felt WHIT was the perfect place to highlight our impact on global sleep health with the notion that great sleep starts in the bedroom.

What have you learned from your collaboration at WHIT?

WHIT and the tours we’ve conducted has allowed SleepScore Labs to show how technology and science can greatly improve sleep and help people unlock their true potential. The response from people who have experienced the SleepScore Labs Sleep Sanctuary has been extremely positive and has created discussion about how sleep can be improved without the introduction of sleep medication or products with no scientific approval. We, along with the other WHIT partners are aligned on the idea of creating a home of wellness through proven technology.

What are you hoping to accomplish over the next year?

We hope to continue showing visitors how their sleep and bedroom environment can be improved through technology and science. We look forward to the interactive website we’ve created for the bedroom that provides guests who stay in the room with a self-guided tour through all the featured products and sleep routines important for better sleep. As WHIT continues to set the international standard for wellness living, we’re excited to leverage media coverage that shows the world what’s possible for healthier living in their homes.

What inspired you to rethink a technology focused on mental health?

In a word… NEED! I was raised believing that if you think that something “needs” to happen or to be done, then don’t just talk about it, do it! As a neuroscientist I worked for almost two decades in leading research institutions, such as the National Institutes of Health and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, developing and leading research designed to better understand brain function. “How does our brain create categories of all things in our environment?”, “How does it represent these concepts?”, “How does it relate it to Language”, “How did the brain evolve into our current cognitive abilities?”, etc. We have made incredible advances on the understanding of the brain and related mental pathologies, however, I started feeling that the much needed translational applications and societal impact was not yet truly happening, and at the personal level that I needed to focus my energy and efforts beyond scientific research and writing and into catalyzing translational change. It had become clear to me that any truly disruptive change in mental health had to include both a medical and a preventive wellness vertical, as they are like the two sides of the proverbial mental health coin. Moreover, there is a wealth of knowledge about brain markers and correlated cognitive functions, such as attention, emotional processing, memory or language that if properly integrated into large scale deployable and personalized solutions can dramatically change mental health. Knowing this, I knew what I had to try… and Neuroverse was created.

Why is Neuroverse important to a person's health and wellbeing?

With the striking proliferation of mental health pathologies due to both: i) the rising anxiety and fragmentation of attention, as a result of the structure of our modern society and ii) cognitive decline and increase of neurodegenerative disorders associated with prolonged aging, finding solutions that can help people to manage these conditions occurring throughout the life-span is becoming paramount. The ability to individually monitor and provide personalized solutions to affect positive changes in mental health and well-being, at a large population-based scale through the use of digital wearable technology, is a revolutionary concept. So far, unfortunately, unlike other cases where significant progress has been made, such as wearable biosensors to measure cardiac and glucose status, most available solutions in the neural space are not suitable to provide a usable means for individuals to reliably monitor, change or train certain aspects of their mental performance and mental health. The Neuroverse, Inc. BrainStation® system was developed to specifically address this need.

Why did you choose to work at WHIT?

Neuroverse has decided to work with WHIT because WHIT provides a unique vision of a real-world and everyday life environment, as well as the opportunity to cultivate partnerships and synergistic development with other like-minded innovation developers, in which we can explore ways to collaboratively bring together nutrition, exercise, rest, sleep and socialization to improve health and well-being in a way that makes sense for the general public.

What have you learned from your collaboration at WHIT?

My collaboration at WHIT has reminded me of the crucial role of a “home” and it inspired me to further think about other aspects of health and wellness besides mental health. Such as ways in which home environments can be better designed and organized to allow for sustainable and more socially driven solutions for families to be able to seamlessly incorporate health and wellness into their home, which sits at the core of their daily lives.

What are you hoping to accomplish over the next year?

Over the next year, we are hoping to expand our current offerings, further integrating input from both user feedback and ongoing strategic partnerships, in preparation for the launch of our first general consumer product.

What inspired you to rethink the kitchen?

As a busy mom and founding principal of a boutique architecture firm, I found myself without time or energy to feed myself, let alone nourish myself and my family with healthy, nutrient-rich meals.

Like many of us over recent years, I’d become acutely aware of the role nutrition plays in empowering wellbeing, longevity, and performance – not to mention the prevention of disease, illness, and premature aging.

My desperation to make healthy eating a reality for my family and frustration with the challenge fueled the inspiration for the Wellness Kitchen.

I had realized two things: firstly, kitchens have changed little over the last 70 years, despite massive shifts in the food industry and secondly, the majority of time-saving elements in kitchens are there to service diets that consist of eating preservative-laden, highly-processed food.

So, the kitchen had to be reimagined to make it more convenient to eat a living, vegetable-based diet, while daily rituals had to be both a realistic and an enjoyable reprieve from the frenetic pace of everyday life in the information era.

Why is the kitchen important to a person's health and wellbeing?

The food we eat powers our existence. It impacts our cognitive performance, physical performance, emotions, and more. In fact, 69% of chronic disease in the United States is preventable, and largely influenced by diet. It's time to add ease and joy to establishing daily habits that nourish us to promote vitality and longevity.
